The Rewards and Challenges of Studying Psychology Online

Studying online at Western Sydney University Online (WSUO) has been an incredibly enriching and rewarding experience. As a rural student, online tertiary education has provided me with the best of both worlds, allowing me to dedicate time to my studies while also working. Currently, I am undertaking a full-time study load at WSUO, which consists of six units per year, and I work part-time for 30 hours a week.

The WSUO learning platform offers structured course content that is accessible at any time, meaning there are no set lecture or tutorial times. This flexibility allows students to tailor their study schedules to their individual needs and circumstances, making higher education accessible to a broader range of students and breaking down geographical and logistical barriers.

As a psychology student, my course delves deep into understanding human behaviour, emotions, and mental processes. It ranges from foundational and introductory psychology units to specialised subjects like cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, and abnormal psychology. This curriculum is designed to provide a robust understanding of the field of psychology.

However, there are some things I wish I had known beforehand. Studying psychology is a long process that I was not prepared for. After graduating from high school, I was quite naïve about what my path to becoming a psychologist would entail. Initially, I presumed my bachelor’s degree in science, criminology, and psychological studies would get me exactly where I wanted to go, but I was mistaken. With the help of the Country Universities Centre (CUC), my view of this pathway changed dramatically. I learnt that I would need to complete a bachelor’s degree, followed by a one-year honours degree in psychology, and a two-year master’s degree to become a registered psychologist.

Furthermore, I underestimated the importance of staying organised and proactive. The volume of reading, research, and assignments can be overwhelming at times. In my first year of study, it became apparent that I do not succeed without a study routine, and it is crucial to establish this early on. The CUC quickly became my study sanctuary. Additionally, actively participating in online discussions and group work significantly enhanced my learning experience. Interacting with other online students helped me build a sense of community and offered alternative perspectives on learning materials.

Joining the CUC has been instrumental in my study journey. I joined the Griffith CUC in my third trimester of my first year at university, and by my second year of study, I noticed significant increases in my results and productivity. The CUC provided a dedicated study space for me to focus, equipped with essential resources like high-speed internet, study rooms, and access to academic support services. For students in regional areas, CUCs bridge the gap between remote learning and the traditional on-campus experience.

The CUCs also offer a supportive community where students can connect, share experiences, and motivate each other. This sense of belonging and support is invaluable, especially when navigating the challenges of online learning. Moreover, the CUCs host various workshops and events that enhance academic skills and personal development. These opportunities for professional growth and networking have been beneficial in preparing for future career prospects.

Looking back, the journey through online education at WSUO and utilising the resources at CUCs has been transformative. It has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of a supportive learning environment. The combination of WSUO’s comprehensive curriculum and the supportive infrastructure of CUCs creates a conducive learning atmosphere that empowers students to succeed.

In addition to the academic benefits, studying psychology online has provided me with a deeper understanding of the importance of mental health and well-being. This awareness has been particularly relevant in managing the stress and challenges associated with balancing studies, work, and personal life.

Studying psychology online at WSUO, supported by the CUC, has been a fulfilling and enriching experience. The flexibility of online learning, combined with the resources and community provided by the CUCs, creates an ideal environment for academic success. For future students embarking on this journey, embrace the flexibility, stay organised, and take full advantage of the support systems available to you. Your educational journey is what you make of it, and with the right tools and mindset, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
